This Friday the 8th of September UNESCO will celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD) under the theme ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’.

Literacy affects everyone. In Ireland, more than 500,000 people have unmet literacy, numeracy and digital literacy needs. This means they may be unable to fill in a form, vote, read instructions on medicines, add up a bill, help kids with homework or search the web for information. This can negatively impact their confidence and prevent them from participating fully in society.

Help us bridge the literacy gap In Ireland, about one in six adults has unmet literacy needs. Many more have unmet numeracy and digital literacy needs. This means they may be unable to fill in a form, read instructions, add up a bill or search online for information. Unmet literacy needs can exclude people from carrying out a range of everyday activities and prevent them from participating fully in society.
