Programme Aim
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the
theory and practice underpinning the education and care of those who present with special
educational needs to enable the learner to assist in the provision of this education and care.

Education Requirements
NFQ Level 5 in a relevant discipline when accessing a Level 6 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 6 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Minimum statutory school leaving age (16+)


Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities.

Learning Outcomes
To familiarise the learner with the education provision for children with additional needs in
Ireland.
 To examine interventions and design activities for children with special educational needs
 To familiarise the learner with curriculum implementation for children with additional needs
 To reflect on own attitudes, values, beliefs and assumptions in relation to working with and
on behalf of children with additional needs.
 To assist the learner to develop the academic and vocational language, literacy and
numeracy skills related to Early Childhood Care and Education through the medium of the
indicative content.
