Skills to Compete -Sci Fi Miniatures for Film and VFX

The aim of this course is to design and fabricate a hard-edge Sci fi design that relates to current and past designs in this genre. This course will focus on equipping the learner with advanced modelmaking skills for film and TV.

Education Requirements
While there are no specific entry requirements, Centres must ensure that learners have the academic ability to successfully complete the program. Junior Certificate or similar. Also, good level of English language required.

Age Requirements
Applicants must have reached the statutory school leaving age.


Learning Aptitude
Applicant must have a good verbal and written English.

Applicants should have the capacity to take responsibility for health and safety and the quality of their work in a structured context.

A reasonable level of Physical Dexterity


Previous Experience
Previous experience in the film/television industry sector would be an advantage but not essential.
Interest in Art, Carpentry, Painting and/or design previously would be advantageous

On successful completion of the training course learners will be able to:

1- Sci Fi Miniatures for Film & TV
Hard Edge model makers are tasked daily with producing Models to a very high standard, this includes the Miniatures/ hardedge design to be under scrutiny when shot closely, the learner will work from a concept and Architectural Drawings to make the finished piece, this course will be the most advanced course to date for finished piece.

2- Manual Handling and Fire Safety
Manually lift and move objects and loads safely and to also deal with fire on an emergency basis. Also, to emphasize the danger of fire, the importance of prevention and the necessity of urgent action when fire breaks out.

3- Chemical Safety Awareness
Demonstrate the relevant awareness and understanding of chemical safety in the workplace.

4- First Aid Responder
Demonstrate the required knowledge and skills as a certified First Aid Responder

5- SAFEPASS
Work on construction sites without being a danger to themselves or others. *Note Safepass certification is required for entry onto all film sets as they are deemed construction sites.

Learners will attend class for 5 weeks. The class times each week will include an extra fifteen minutes per day plus Friday afternoons, to compensate for the additional weekly class times, Learners will be paid as “Job Search” for the final week, they will not be required to attend class that week. The course flyer is currently being developed and will be forwarded as soon as it has been completed.
