Skills to Compete – Prop Making for Stunts and Set Decoration

The purpose of this course is to enable the learner to acquire the skills to work as trainee model makers in the Irish Film Industry. This course will focus on the study of the many different types of techniques to produce moulds and work with materials that are used by today’s professionals.

Education Requirements
While there are no specific entry requirements, centres must ensure that learners have the academic ability to successfully complete the program. Junior Certificate or similar. Also good level of English language required.

Age Requirements
Applicants must have reached the statutory school leaving age.


Learning Aptitude
Have good verbal and written English. Applicants showing a keen interest in working in the film industry, a portfolio of interests (props/miniatures) and previous work would also be key in the selection process


Previous Experience
Previous experience in the film/television industry sector would be an advantage but not essential.
Interest in Art, Carpentry, Painting and/or design previously would be advantageous

On successful completion of the Training Course, learners will be able to:

1- Prop Making for Stunts & Set Decoration
Create moulds to detailed specifications. Film model makers are tasked daily with producing props and set decoration elements for actors, costumes, and sets. One of the most crucial aspects of a professional modelmakers job, is the ability to produce replicas of real-world objects. The key skill here lies in creating a mould of a given object.

2- Manual Handling and Fire Safety
manually lift and move objects and loads safely and to also deal with fire on an emergency basis. Also to emphasise the danger of fire, the importance of prevention and the necessity of urgent action when fire breaks out.

3- Chemical Safety Awareness
Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of chemical safety in the workplace.

4- First Aid Responder
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills as a certified First Aid Responder

5- Safepass
Work on construction sites without being a danger to themselves or others. *Note Safepass certification is required for entry onto all film sets as they are deemed construction sites.
