Life Sciences & Production Operations Traineeship
The aim of this course is to provide the learners with the knowledge, skill and competence to undertake fluid transfer related tasks, interpret and use PFD’s and P&ID’s and operate process control equipment complying with relevant health, safety and environmental regulations and controls in the life sciences industry.
On successful completion of the course, learners may progress to further education and training or to employment.

Applicants seeking entry to the course must have achieved a minimum of a QQI Level 4 Major Award or its equivalent prior to entry to the course. ECDL or equivalent desirable.

Applicants must have reached the statutory school leaving age
Learning Aptitude
Good numerical and communication skills are essential including verbal and written command of
the English language.

2-QUALITY AND GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICE (5N1959)
Perform a range of manufacturing tasks in compliance with quality standards and good
manufacturing practice
3-HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS (5N2158)
Perform a range of tasks in compliance with current health, safety and environmental regulations
and controls for the manufacturing or services sector.
4-PLANT UTILITIES (5N3484)
Undertake a range of fluid transfer related tasks whilst working at operative level in the life
sciences manufacturing sector.
5- CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURING (5N1915)

Utilise a range of continuous improvement methodologies whilst working at operative level in the life sciences manufacturing sector.
6-UNIT OPERATIONS
Describe principle of unit operations and discuss theory and application of typical unit operations
in pharmaceutical manufacturing; such as fluid flow, heat transfer, separation, milling, interpret
and use Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams and Process Flow Diagrams. Operate desktop
Chemical Reactors, Filtration Unit and Solids Study Bench equipment.
7-IT & PROCESS CONTROL
Explain the role and responsibilities of a process operator in pharmaceutical manufacturing;
describe the purpose of the equipment used in automation systems; operate process control
equipment through use of control panels, dedicated controllers, programmable logic controllers,
computers and basic word processing software.
8-CAREER PLANNING AND JOB SEEKING SKILLS
Plan and achieve realistic work goals.
9-IN COMPANY WORK PLACEMENT
Demonstrate a broad range of occupational competencies in a real work environment.
