Art, Craft and Design with Jewellery, Glass and Ceramics Crafts – Yr 2
Purpose
This two year craft skills Creative Craft QQI 5M1981 Award – with hands on tuition from craft practitioners – develops the learner’s art, craft and design skills. Jewellery making with silver, copper and enamelling; stained and fused glass; woodcraft skills and ceramics are also taught to a high standard as well as painting and drawing. Students learn to stage and host an exhibition (include picture framing) in the Waterford City and County Central Library and to prepare art portfolios for third level in the second year of the programme.

Start Date: 08-09-2025 Hours/week: 22 Hrs 00 Mins Duration: 38 weeks
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Graduates will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to start their own craft business. Waterford VTOS works with the option of participating in the Local Enterprise Office “Start Your Own Business” and social media workshops in second year. Studio placements may be offered with the Kite Design Centre, a local craft and design centre in Waterford City.
Graduates have progressed to SETU higher and third level craft and design courses e.g. the Crawford College of Art & Design.
Waterford VTOS operates the Higher Links Scheme with SETU and IoTs and our Creative Craft 5M1981 graduates can progress to the following programmes: BSc in Architectural Technology; BA(H) in Design (Visual Communications); Bachelor of Architecture (H); BA(H) in Visual Art and BSc (H) in Architectural & Building Information Modelling Technology.
