SNA Programme – Children with Additional Needs QQI 5

This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to
work efficiently and effectively, under direction with young children with additional needs. It aims
to provide the learner with the knowledge and understanding of the context of special needs,
associated issues and approaches used.

Education Requirements
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 4 when accessing a Level 5 programme

Age Requirements
Learners must have reached the statutory school leaving age


Learning Aptitude
Good verbal and written command of the English language with good comprehension skills.
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and
competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the
ability to work on their own initiative

To assist the learner to be familiar with historical, legislative and policy
developments relating to children with special needs
 To assist the learner to understand the concepts of children with special needs
 To assist the learner to be familiar with national and local models of service for
children with special needs
 To enable the learner to demonstrate good work practices and approaches in
working with children with special needs
 To enable the learner to reflect on abilities and aptitudes needed to work with
children with special needs
 To assist the learner to develop the academic and vocational language, literacy
and numeracy skills related to Early Childhood Care and Education through the
medium of the indicative conten
No formal education or qualifications are required although applicants may have participated in primary and secondary education. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 4 when accessing a Level 5 programme. Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
