Skills To Compete – Welding Intermediate

The purpose of this programme is to enable the learners to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to work in Carbon Steel Plate, Stainless Steel and Aluminium Welding at a variety of positions and to develop their attitudes, person effectiveness and job seeking skills to enable them to obtain employment as Welders.

Employability Statement
On successful completion of the programme will enable applicant to source employment as Welders or progress on to Coded Pipe Welding.

Start Date: 13-01-2025 Hours/week: 31 Hrs 15 Mins Duration: 20 weeks

Education Requirements
Successfully completed a Basic Welding Course.

Age Requirements
Applicants must have reached the statutory school leaving age.


Learning Aptitude
Successfully completed a practical welding test to basic standard.


Previous Experience
Previous welding experience essential. Min 2 years in the workplace.

On successful completion of the training programme, learners will be able to:

1- Select and mount Abrasive Wheels safely in accordance with current and relevant safety
legislation and guidance documentation HSG 17.

2- Use the following machines and tools that are associated with welding in a safe and proper
method: a) Angle Grinder. b) Bench Grinder. c) Belt Sanders. d) Band Saw.

3- Use oxy-acetylene cutting equipment to cut mild steel plate of various thickness.
– State and interpret welding procedures and standards, explain welding responsibility with
regard to third party safety; explain the causes of common welding defects and methods of prevention.

4- Weld arc fillet welds in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions to complete ‘tee fillet’
and ‘butt’ joints.

5- Weld mild steel lap joints, tee joints and outside corner joints in the 2F and 3F position.

6- Weld stainless steel plate in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions to complete ‘lap fillet’
and the ‘tee fillet’joints.

7- Weld aluminium plate in horizontal and vertical positions to complete ‘lap fillet’ and ‘tee fillet’
joints.

8- Demonstrate a broad range of occupational competencies in a real work environment.

9- Weld Butt Welds in 5G 2G and 6G positions on stainless steel Sch 10 pipe to industrial
standard EN9601.

10- Weld Butt Welds in 5G 2G and 6G positions on carbon steel sch 40 pipe to Industrial standard
EN9601.

11- Cut mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium using plasma cutting equipment.

12- Plan and achieve realistic work goals.
