On Thursday 25 February Ireland Reads is inviting people of all ages to get reading. Take the pledge  and see how many minutes people all over Ireland will be squeezing in to read on Thursday 25 February at  https://www.irelandreads.ie/ 

Ireland Reads is a public libraries initiative, in partnership with publishers, booksellers, authors and others under the Government’s ‘Keep Well’ campaign.

WWETB are asking staff and learners to consider any one (or all) of the following:

(a) submit a picture of you with your book of choice and why you like it to communications@wwetb.ie. Please put Ireland Reads in the email Subject Line

(b) design a book mark

(c) write a poem or share a poem you have written

(d) write/draw a cartoon

(e) write a piece or share a previous piece you have written

  1. Kilnamanagh CNS Pledge

Kilnamanagh Community National School have taken on the direct challenge from International Best Selling author Eoin Colfer, author of Artemis Fowl. Click here to watch Eoin’s video message to the pupils of Kilnamanagh CNS, Ourlart.

2 Staff of Whitemill Training Centre

Core staff are taking part in a coffee morning on Teams, which they usually try to keep up to part take in a personal connection while all working from home. This week they are changing that to Thursday 25th and are taking in the time to #SqueezeInARead by bringing one recommendation for each other to read.

The group has promised to share a photo along with their recommendations! We look forward to receiving those!

3. Gorey ESOL & Adult Education Tutor, Edel Finan has pledged to host an event on the 25th with a small group of learners have had a class reading group going since last October. The purpose of the event is to:

  • Share their experience of reading short stories each week. this week they will cover Voices An Open Door – Book of Stories edited by Patricia Scanlan.
  • Share experiences of being part of a classroom based book club.
  • Read two short stories to all participating on Thursday.
  • Invite participants to comment on the stories, if they wish.
  • Highlight all the benefits of reading.
  • Encourage all participants to “squeeze in a read” for pleasure & knowledge. #Keepwell

4. Snuggle Stories on WLR FM- an initiative of the WWETB Adult Literacy Programme in Co. Waterford

Listen back: “Snuggle Stories” is a multi-agency initiative in Waterford aimed at helping parents read to kids – WLR

This project is an early literacy initiative included as an action in the Waterford Children and Young People’s plan (2016-1018). Snuggle stories is an inter-agency initiative including The H.S.E, Waterford Library services, Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board, Waterford Childcare committee, Respond Support, Túsla, Foróige and Waterford Area Partnership.
